God’s Promise to Abram
17 Then after his return from the [a]defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, (A)the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, (B)the King’s Valley). 18 And (C)Melchizedek the king of Salem brought out (D)bread and wine; now he was a (E)priest of [b]God Most High. 19 And he blessed him and said,
“Blessed be Abram of [c]God Most High,
[d](F)Possessor of heaven and earth;
20 And blessed be [e]God Most High,
Who has handed over your enemies to you.”
And (G)he gave him a tenth of everything. 21 Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give the [f]people to me and take the possessions for yourself.” 22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have [g]sworn to the Lord [h](H)God Most High, [i](I)Possessor of heaven and earth, 23 that (J)I will not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, so that you do not say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’ 24 [j]I will take nothing except what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me, (K)Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their share.”
Abram Promised a Son
15 After these things (L)the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying,

You Have Robbed God
8 “Would anyone rob God? Yet you are robbing Me! But you say, ‘How have we robbed You?’ In (A)tithes and [a]offerings. 9 You are (B)cursed with a curse, for you are robbing Me, the entire nation of you! 10 (C)Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and put Me to the test now in this,” says the Lord of armies, “if I do not (D)open for you the windows of heaven and (E)pour out for you a blessing until [b](F)it overflows. 11 Then I will rebuke the (G)devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruit of your ground; nor will the vine in the field prove fruitless to you,” says the Lord of armies. 12 “(H)All the nations will call you blessed, for you will be a (I)delightful land,” says the Lord of armies.
13 “Your words have been [c]arrogant against Me,” says the Lord. “Yet you say, ‘What have we spoken against You?’ 14 You have said, ‘It is (J)pointless to serve God; and what (K)benefit is it for us that we have done what He required, and that we have walked in mourning before the Lord of armies? 15 So now we (L)call the arrogant blessed; not only are the doers of wickedness built up, but they also put God to the test and (M)escape punishment.’”
The Book of Remembrance
16 Then those who [d]feared the Lord spoke to one another, and the Lord (N)listened attentively and heard it, and a (O)book of remembrance was written before Him for those who [e]fear the Lord and esteem His name. 17 “And they will be (P)Mine,” says the Lord of armies, “on the (Q)day that I [f]prepare My (R)own possession, and I will have compassion for them just as a man (S)has compassion for his own son who serves him.” 18 So you will again (T)distinguish between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve Him.

New International Version
8 “Will a mere mortal rob(A) God? Yet you rob me.
“But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’
“In tithes(B) and offerings. 9 You are under a curse(C)—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. 10 Bring the whole tithe(D) into the storehouse,(E) that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates(F) of heaven and pour out(G) so much blessing(H) that there will not be room enough to store it.(I) 11 I will prevent pests from devouring(J) your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,(K)” says the Lord Almighty. 12 “Then all the nations will call you blessed,(L) for yours will be a delightful land,”(M) says the Lord Almighty.(N)
Israel Speaks Arrogantly Against God
13 “You have spoken arrogantly(O) against me,” says the Lord.
“Yet you ask,(P) ‘What have we said against you?’
14 “You have said, ‘It is futile(Q) to serve(R) God. What do we gain by carrying out his requirements(S) and going about like mourners(T) before the Lord Almighty? 15 But now we call the arrogant(U) blessed. Certainly evildoers(V) prosper,(W) and even when they put God to the test, they get away with it.’”
The Faithful Remnant
16 Then those who feared the Lord talked with each other, and the Lord listened and heard.(X) A scroll(Y) of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared(Z) the Lord and honored his name.
17 “On the day when I act,” says the Lord Almighty, “they will be my(AA) treasured possession.(AB) I will spare(AC) them, just as a father has compassion and spares his son(AD) who serves him. 18 And you will again see the distinction between the righteous(AE) and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.(AF)
